Studio Visit

Inside the Creative Hub of Mark Braun

Tucked away in a former piano factory in Berlin, Mark Braun’s studio is more than just a workspace—it’s a creative ecosystem where design meets craftsmanship. Located near the vibrant districts of Kreuzberg and Neukölln, the space is shared with a diverse mix of artists, filmmakers, goldsmiths, and architects. We visited the studio to get a glimpse of the everyday magic.

His studio is structured across two floors: a hands-on workshop equipped with tools and machines, and a clean studio space dedicated to digital design, 3D printing, photography, and meetings. Here, Braun and his team of three dive into a daily rhythm that blends analogue experimentation with digital precision. “The workspace is my creative hub,” he explains. “This is where I bring my ideas to life in a vital and evolving design process.”

A Day in the Studio

Mornings at Braun’s studio begin with a ritual: coffee or tea, and a quick rundown of the day’s tasks. From there, the team disperses into their projects, with Braun guiding the creative direction while also engaging in his own hands-on work. Whether sketching, refining prototypes, or researching materials, the balance between concept and craftsmanship is ever-present.

Inspiration and Philosophy

Braun’s design sensibility is deeply rooted in observation. A keen student of human habits and cultural identities, he finds endless inspiration in everyday interactions. But beyond this, his process is heavily influenced by materials and production techniques. “I love working closely with factories and makers,” he says, emphasizing his hands-on approach to design.

His connection to Nordic design runs deep. With Swedish roots on his father’s side, Scandinavian aesthetics have been an intrinsic part of his creative DNA. “My Swedish grandparents were an architect and an artist,” he shares. “Their approach to design gave me an early understanding of how well-crafted furniture and objects bring both function and harmony into daily life.”

A Lasting Collaboration with Northern

Braun’s collaboration with Northern has been a defining chapter in his career. His first design for Northern, the Bell lamp, remained in production for nearly a decade and helped establish his presence in the Scandinavian market. More recently, his Treble bar stool—an elegant yet playful design that merges functionality with sculptural form—has been a celebrated addition to Northern’s collection. Initially released in a 65 cm height, the Treble stool is now also available in a 75 cm high version, expanding its versatility for different spaces and uses.

“Northern is one of those rare producers that remain strong and committed, always focused on achieving the best in design and function,” Braun notes. “Being part of their family is truly special—their positive and respectful approach makes collaboration a pleasure.”
