Fuglen is more than just a coffee shop or roaster — it is a carefully curated blend of Norwegian coffee culture and design. Originally founded in Oslo in 1963, the shop has expanded internationally the last years, with six locations in Japan, one in Seoul and one in Jakarta. What sets Fuglen apart is its dedication to quality coffee, mid-century Norwegian design, and a unique business philosophy that prioritizes storytelling and experience over pure commercial interests.
The connection between coffee and design is at the heart of Fuglen’s identity. The founders brought together expertise in direct trade coffee, cocktails rooted in local and seasonal ingredients, and Norwegian vintage furniture design.
“A link between coffee and design at Fuglen is quality and storytelling,” explains the team. “Norwegian 50s, 60s, and 70s design history is rich with designers creating everything from ceramics to wooden furniture of high design and functional quality. Fuglen is a place that showcases interiors from these eras, and our sister company Norwegian Icons promotes and sells the objects.”
Every Fuglen café is designed to feel more like a warm and inviting living room, where guests can enjoy great coffee during daytime and unique drinks by night. The philosophy is simple: just as high-quality coffee tells a story through its origin and roasting process, so too does the furniture and lighting that make up the space.
Oslo-vibe in Asia
Fuglen’s expansion into Asia has been met with enthusiasm where there is a deep appreciation for Scandinavian aesthetics.
“The reception in Asia has been incredible, with many visitors and media mentions,” shares the team. “I remember a young South Korean woman visiting our Seoul location when we opened there. She told me she loved Fuglen not just for the coffee, but because the interior felt like a comfortable home. She was so inspired that she wanted to design her own space in the same style.”
This anecdote reflects a key reason for Fuglen’s success abroad — the ability to translate Norwegian design into an atmosphere that feels both aspirational and deeply personal.

The Role of Lighting
Lighting plays an essential role in shaping the atmosphere at Fuglen. The Dokka and Dahl pendant lamps, designed by Norwegian mid-century designer Birger Dahl, plays a central role in the interior.
“Fuglen’s history dates back to the early 60’s, when Kaffefuglen first opened in Oslo. That’s why most of our interiors are Norwegian and rooted in the mid-century era. The Dokka and Dahl lamps fit perfectly with this aesthetic, and we love featuring these icons in many of our shops.”
With a legacy built on quality, history, and craftsmanship, Fuglen continues to bridge the gap between Norwegian design and global café culture.
