Crafted to Inspire: Designer Anne Hirvonen on the Fab Vase

In a world increasingly captivated by rapid production and fleeting trends, the art of glassmaking remains an exceptional testament to patience, skill, and artistry. At our design house, we had the privilege of working with Finnish designer Anne Hirvonen, whose vision and deep respect for the glass medium are encapsulated in the Fab vase. In this interview, Hirvonen shares the inspirations, processes, and philosophies that brought the Fab vase to life.

Inspiration and Design Process

Hirvonen’s journey with the Fab vase began with a burgeoning appreciation for the handcraft involved in glassmaking. “My appreciation for glassmaking as a craft has grown as I’ve become more aware of the manufacturing process and the professionalism it requires,” she explained. Drawing on her prior explorations of recyclable materials, techniques, and shapes, she envisioned the Fab vase as “a bold and sturdy shape, like a pillar of a building.”

Reflecting on the development process, with testing of different sizes, colours, and patterns, made the journey an exciting collaboration. The initial idea was based on a concept she created for the Northern Design Award 2022. “It was a pleasure to work with Northern’s design team,” she noted, as they fine-tuned the vase’s design across borders, with Hirvonen based in Finland and the Northern development team in Norway.

The Fab vase stands out with its visually commanding shape and a unique, removable metal disc, which Hirvonen sees as both playful and practical. This element invites users to experiment, turning floral arrangements into an interactive, creative experience. “There’s something interesting about the shape that differs from a traditional vase,” she said, describing how its geometric design language allows it to reimagine classic vase form.

Design Philosophy and Future Projects

At the heart of Hirvonen’s design ethos is her desire to challenge conventions. Each of her projects explores an underlying technique that she builds upon, transforming every creation into a learning journey. “Glass is a challenging material,” Hirvonen reflected, adding that glassmaking has taught her patience and humility. This dedication to experimentation and her enduring curiosity are what continue to drive her.

As for upcoming projects, Hirvonen hinted at a new glass endeavour where she intends to reinvent a traditional glassblowing technique. With her eye for innovation and deep respect for craftsmanship, we’re excited to see how she will breathe new life into age-old techniques.

The Fab vase is more than a decorative object—it’s a testament to Anne Hirvonen’s approach to design: rooted in tradition, yet open to exploration and reinterpretation.
